Built to Fly

Seeds from a maple tree, also known as samaras, grow in pairs but often separate when they fall. The longer they twirl, the further they travel. After their flight, the wing-like structures rest on the ground in scattered abundance. Starting in August 2021, I have collected these seeds to sew them back together into sets of wings.

These wings have travelled with me over the past year, first taking flight as floor to ceiling installation inside of the Woollen Mill Gallery, a space less than 10 miles away from the tree they fell from.

11 months later, they gathered once again, this time covering a cracking branch that hung from a maple tree as a part of the Farm/Art DTour.
